Writing and Broadcasting experience in Ahmedabad

On selection by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for the post of Programme Executive, Spoken Word (English/Hindi) All India Radio (Akashvani), Ahmedabad, by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India, New Delhi I got myself relieved from the post of Technical Assistant to the Director, Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, Orissa, India and joined at the AIR station at Navrangpura Ahmedabad on the 11th July, 1975.

My job was to schedule programmes in English and Hindi, decide the subject, the speaker and the date and time. I was also in charge of the Hindi lessons. These were changed to situation-based lessons with approval from the Ministry, to teach conversational Hindi and were very much appreciated by the non-Hindi speaking public. I covered all important functions and conferences on the spot and feature programmes were subsequently made and broadcast. I was also given the job of interviewing eminent personalities. In addition I was also given the job of starting an Urdu programme for half an hour every Sunday. Primarily my job was projecting the talent of others.

I was made the Officer on Special Duty for the commentators box for the running commentary on the first unofficial Test Match between India and Sri Lanka held at Ahmedabad in 1975- 76.

Some field-based programmes were also made and broadcast by me as also programmes for the common man.

A number of small talks in Hindi and English on science and technology, development, environment in Aage Kadam and long talks on nature and environment conservation, Advances in Rice Research were written and broadcast by me.

I also gave my voice to that of Shri Aurobindo in a feature programme in English made by Prof V.J.Trivedi on Sri Aurobindo.

All science programmes were also made with my approval.

I was in charge of recording the address of the Governor and visited the Governor’s house.

Once I was called for writing a speech, which I wrote for the Information and Broadcasting Minister.

I took keen interest not only in my work but all other activities of the Radio station and learnt many aspects of broadcasting.

I left AIR Ahmedabad in 1976 November after working there for one year and four months but felt as if I had been there for more than twenty years in terms of the variety and magnitude of experiences.
